Watch out for fake labels offering you a "record deal"

Almost every artist I talk to has a dream of getting signed to a label. I tell them to stay independent because they can make more money that way. They don't listen to me...that's fine. They are convinced that they want to be on a label. So then I tell them to beware of the fake labels with fake CEO's out there. Nothing amuses me more than a so called label with no budget or anything to offer an artist. Some of them even try to charge artists to be on their label. Let's take Cash Money/ Young Money for example...they not only have a budget, but they have a real studio, managers, artist development, and many more people behind the scenes to make sure their artists are successful. Let's talk about a few things that might be a red flag when it comes to a "record label".   

1. Do they have a physical location or are they located in some studio apartment in the hood?  

2. Do they have a website...we talked about this yesterday...click here to read about why artists (or labels in this case) should have one.  

3. Do they have any successful artists on their label? 

 4. Do they see potential in you and simply want to get you locked into a contract to take away a good portion of your earnings?  

5. Are they offering you something that you can do on your own..such as getting online distribution for your music or physical copies of your music?  

6. Most of all, are they making you pay to be on their label?  

There are many more things to watch out for when dealing music industry scam artists, but the main thing to do is use your common sense. Don't be fooled by anyone! No one person or label is your way to the top of the charts. I've seen a ton of people on a major label that can't seem to get a hit record. So do your due diligence before accepting any type of deal! Remember...you are your success.

Having A Website Is A Must In Order To Be Taken Seriously! How many times have you been approached by a person prompting you to buy a product or service from them only to be directed to a weebly website or some sort of blog. If you are anything like me then that is a complete turn off. If the person urging you to buy from them hasn't made the effort to invest in a website then why would you invest in their service. A website or domain is what a book does for an author, it gives you credibility. Without a website that you can brand you do not differ from the millions of other people trying to make a sale. You can get a website for 10 to 24 dollars for an entire year so there is no excuse not to have one. I get so sick of artists always have weed and alcohol but not the things they need to actually make it in the industry. A website is easy to get and easy to build in 2014, so what is stopping you from making an impact online?

Attention Indie Artists! Stop Promoting Your Music to Other Artists!

Ask yourself this question...If you were a small business owner, would you advertise your business to other business owners in your field of work? If you said no, then you are right. The business owners in your field are only interested in people that are interested in buying their product or service, not someone that is offering their product or service. Same thing goes for music artists. I have even heard some artists say that they even try not to listen to other people's music to avoid sounding like anyone else. 

If you spend all day posting your music links in other groups and pages full of artists, how will you stand out? How will you find fans? Your target demographics should be people that DO NOT make music and are looking for new music to listen to. So how do you find these people? Let's focus on how you can find them online first. Facebook allows you to search for very specific things. You can search for people that live in a a particular area that likes your particular genre of music.

You can then attempt to invite them to listen to your music...but do not do it right off. Build a relationship with these people before you start advertising to them. Make them want to check out your music without you even having to ask them. Every single one of your posts should not be a link to your music. This will get you unfriended really fast! People like to get to know you as yourself not the artist all the time. If you take the time to build a relationship with them they will not mind checking out your music. If you spam them out of the blue as soon as they accept your friend request expect to get ignored lol. If you don't follow ANY of this advice, please follow this advice: OTHER ARTISTS ARE NOT LOOKING TO BE YOUR FANS! THEY ARE LOOKING FOR THEIR OWN FANS!!!! 

The chances of getting noticed in a group full of other artists hoping to get noticed are slim.

Stand out by staying out of those groups!

You would be better off trying to search for people online that like your kind of music. Also get out there and attend indie music events and locate potential fans that way! Do something that will separate your from the other artists trying to make it! Why do you think #YMCMB is so popular??? Because they did something different to stay ahead of the game!
